I am a wife, mom of 3 beautiful children, and a certified pediatric sleep consultant, and owner of Sunshine Sleep Consulting. I graduated from The University of Utah with a degree in Business, and worked as a bookkeeper for over 5 years, but after having my daughter decided to stay home with my children. I never felt truly connected to any of my jobs, but as soon as I became a mother I felt that this was my true purpose.
Our journey with sleep began when my son was about 3 months old. After my son was born, he was sent to Primary Children’s to receive a surgery to connect his Esophagus to his Stomach (a condition called TEF). He spent just over a month in the NICU recovering. He slept so well in the NICU that I thought this whole sleep thing was going to be a breeze, we skipped over the hard part. This perfect sleeping baby turned into a nightmare!
Pretty soon we were waking up to a screaming baby every hour of the night, and having to rock and hold him for almost 30 minutes while he was screaming to finally get him back to sleep. I was exhausted, and started having some scary thoughts, and I knew we couldn’t keep doing this.
I decided to try a one-size-fits all sleep plan for my son, and while it helped a little bit, our sleep problems were far from over. We became so desperate that cry it out seemed like the only option. After a week of cry it out my son was finally sleeping on his own, but I had hated that I had to go to such an extreme because I had let my mental health get so bad.
I decided to do things differently with my daughter. Before she was born, I researched extensively about baby sleep, and when she was born immediately started implementing healthy sleep habits. She was the easiest and happy baby in the whole world and by 3 months old she was sleeping through the night. I couldn’t believe the difference I had felt between these two children and I knew that sleep was the answer to so many parenting struggles we face.
I strongly believe that no two babies are the same. Some babies will need more help than others when learning these independent sleep skills. I believe that teaching your child healthy sleep habits can greatly improve your bond and make you both happier. I believe in meeting baby and parent where they are and creating a sleep plan that works for them. I will never ask a parent to follow a sleep plan that they are not comfortable with, or that the baby is not doing well with.
